Spectrum Cosmetics...First Impressions

So I had the opportunity to take advantage of Spectrum Cosmetics (SC) Summer Sale a week ago. I couldn't pass up the loose eyeshadows for only $1!! With shipping, the grand total still was under $2 a color...very affordable.
Now a little background, SC is a natural, handmade cosmetic line that is easy on the face, wallet and also good for the community. Before doing any shopping, I browsed the website for a bit (www.sp3ctrum.com) and found out that owner, Amber Rose, donates proceeds of some of her products to Autism Research and Education. Any business that does good by customers and their community get an A in my book.
The ordering process was quite simple. I paid through PayPal and received confirmation and a receipt almost immediately. SC was speedy in shipping my order and was here in 5 business days via USPS. The packaging was adequate in keeping my jars safe on their trek and saved from any spillage. Jars were packaged in clear bags by 4s and packed with my receipt and a few SC business cards (see above).

Each jar was easily marked with name and ingredients, nice for any of you out there with sensitive skin. Also each contains a standard sifter. Sifters are not for me and there wasn't an option to opt out of one, but still won't down SC strictly based on a preference like that. So as you see, I started with 10 pigments to get a good selection for review. I am very impressed with the colors after swatching and look forward to coming up  with a few looks for the official review.

-All colors over NYX base in white-

So while you anxiously await a review check out Spectrum Cosmetics for yourself....the U-Turn Sale is going on now. Until next time dolls <3

Sally Hansen Salon Effects

I was lucky enough this past week to attend a vendor fair that was sampling Sally Hansen's NEW "Salon Effects" line. This product is real nail polish in many designs but in tab form that allows for quick application and no dry time.
The kit comes with 8 tabs per hand so you can find the size to fit each finger, a cuticle stick, file and instructions. And for someone who isn't super coordinated, it was a breeze (I put them on while watching South Park). The instructions are very detailed and take you step by step, even though after the first set you will not need them. They are stated to last up to 10 days and are true to their word. I had very little come off in the ten days, even after working 8 hour days, cleaning, and doing dishes. Retail is between $8.50 and $10 and is carried and various big box retailers and drug stores.

Overall, I give this a product a rave review (****). Simple, time-saving, and longlasting. Now if only the price will go down a bit, I would definitely replace every bottle of polish I own for tabs. A big thank you to Sally Hansen for letting me enjoy polish without finger prints on them :)
Check out this and other Sally Hansen products at www.sallyhansen.com. *Review item was not received free or at discounted price.
Salon Effects in "Laced Up"

If you haven't had a chance to check out any tutorials on youtube, I highly recommend this gal (jazziebabycakes). The best way to browse from there is just look through who these guru's are subscribing to.  So happy hunting!

A Humble Beginning

I am not entirely sure of blogger's etiquette, but thought that I would start by posting a little information on how this came to be. This will not be a semi-novel starting back with a wee small child playing in the lipstick and nail polish. I will begin with the fact that there should be a guidebook given to each girl explaining the dos and don'ts of makeup and beauty. There are a good deal of those who pick up quickly and make it look like they could have been makeup artists since birth, and then there are girls like me....who in lack of a better term are clueless. I could say this held true for a good chunk of my early adulthood.

Since I was clueless that lead to fear and you could have seen it plain as day on my face. I was bound to foundation, mascara and 1 or 2 pale eyeshadows. Anything else put in front of me and the first words out would have been "How does that work?" Don't get me wrong, I would see these fabulous looks in magazines, on the television, even with those I worked with or saw in my small town, but still had no idea how to approach the vastness of makeup.

And then came a perfect storm...

In November '10, I had a week of vacation with nothing planned. This turned into a reason to be lazy for a bit and spend plenty of time on youtube. In my random browsing, I (a) found out that they have a section purely for how to and (b) found youtube beauty guru jazziebabycakes.  I think I watched every one of her videos in a single sitting. I had no idea that getting amazing looks could be done that easily. Or at least made to look that easy, but how could I attempt to find out if this could work for me without the proper tools?

Wait for it...

Well lucky for this libra baby, I have a wonderful mom who gifts Amazon gift cards for birthdays and holidays. Again, I was completely in awe the vast selection of makeup available at the click of a mouse. I spent two days contemplating how to spend that card, finally deciding on a BH cosmetics 120 color palette. I patiently waited for my package to arrive and was as giddy as a school girl when it finally made it.  I quickly propped myself up in front of the mirror to see if I too could have these beautiful looks I had been seeing demonstrated tutorial style.

I can't say that I went all out that first time around. I was still limited by the confidence I lacked in my ability, but after seeing the results and getting the positive feedback from friends my journey was well on its way.

Makeup has become my hobby...not something to shy away from. But I don't think I could do it justice if I didn't share with those that have been or are in the shoes I filled just a few short months ago. I continue to grow my collection of product and techniques and look forward to reviewing new products, giving some insight, and hopefully helping a few along the way.
